NHL Seattle named Hockey Hall-of-Famer Ron Francis as the first General Manager in franchise history. Francis, a two-time Stanley Cup Champ and a captain of three NHL teams, knows a thing or two about being a leader, building a franchise and what it takes to drink from Lord Stanley’s Cup.

Blues Win the 2019 Stanley Cup

The St. Louis Blues rallied from a rough start to the season with a remarkable run to the playoffs, then ended a 52-year wait by hoisting the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history. (Two more short seasons until Seattle enters the fray to compete for Lord Stanley’s Cup once again.)

Groundbreaking at New Arena at Seattle Center

Wasting no time after the NHL's approval, we trade sticks for shovels and start digging. Governor Jay Inslee, Mayor Jenny Durkan, and other community leaders join Tim and Tod Leiweke to launch, in Durkan's words, "the next generation of the Seattle Center." Next stop: 2021.

The NHL approves Seattle as its 32nd franchise

HISTORY IS MADE! The NHL's Board of Governors votes unanimously in favor of Seattle's expansion application to become the 32nd franchise. Nearly a century after the Metropolitans, Seattle returns to hockey.

Ice Centre announced at Northgate

With a new arena confirmed, NHL Seattle skates north for the homebase of a thriving club. Northgate's Seattle Ice Centre will be the heart of Washington ice sports, with administrative offices plus three rinks for training and public use. True to the Evergreen soul of the PNW, the facility will be constructed of native coniferous timber.

NHL Executive Committee presentation and recommendation

NHL Seattle leadership travel to NYC to present their case to the NHL's Executive Committee and leave with a formal recommendation. Among the delegation is David Bonderman and Mayor Durkan who promise Commissioner Bettman: we'll be ready.

City of Seattle approves an arena

Mayor Jenny Durkan and the Seattle City Council greenlight the New Arena at Seattle Center. Tim Leiweke's vision: "a new global standard at no risk to the city or taxpayers, while still preserving the soul, character, and honoring the champions of an arena that has given Seattle so much."

Local ownership comes aboard

Inside Seattle's iconic Space Needle, Seattle Hockey Partners strengthen their hand by bringing into the fold seven new local investors: David Wright, Andy Jassy, Adrian Hanauer, Jay Deutsch, Christopher Ackerley, Ted Ackerley and Jeffrey Wright. "It's not that we need the money," says principal investor and UW grad David Bonderman, "we need the people."
